Annie Mac is famous for setting the weekend's tone with her 5 minute long mixes on BBC's Radio 1. Breakbot stopped by last Friday and put his two cents down on how he understands what a Mini Mix is. Only he can jam this much funk into such a short amount of time.
My favorite part is how he ends it with a cover of Platinum Pied Pipers' song, Open Your Eyes.
Sometimes I hate myself for overlooking songs. These Canadians came out with this cover of The Smith's This Charming Man. It was part of their Nightsongs LP which came out WAAAY back in 2001. I pride myself on being up-to-date with music, but I guess failed to pay attention to this album during high school. Then again, my taste in music might not have been so cool before.
Time and time again, I've heard people say how they wish they grew up in the 80s. Whenever I hear that, I get wide-eyed because I know how they feel. I was born in the late 80s so I spent a very brief time in that era, not to mention I was still unable to comprehend what was going on around due to my adolescent ignorance. I guess all we have left is the glorious genre of new wave and living vicariously through the movies of John Hughes and the Brat Pack.
I've been enjoying my weekend of downtime here in the suburbs of New Jersey. There really is nothing like the porch my aunt has. It's something right out of Bob Ross' paintings. It feels refreshing to get away from the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple. I just don't "fall asleep here." It's more of a deep slumber. Mainly because it's pitch black and there's a deafening silence. I rarely get this quality of sleep in the city.
The Mystery Jets are an indie band from London, England. When I first heard the original of this song I really thought that it was a cover of some some 60's/7o's song. Up until now, it still sounds like a song I've heard, I just can't pin it down. I think it was more of Blaine Harrison's vocals that gave it that classic UK band vibe.
Tip of the hat to EMPT for featuring this song. It's been on repeat this whole weekend.
Seems the thunder from Down Under just never stops. Fake Moustache is most definitely up-and-coming talent from Australia. Got this gem in my inbox early this morning and it sure woke me up. His remix of Peter Brown's Dance With Me is just the kind of disco rebirth we need. Funk has already paved its way back into the ears of music lovers, but I don't think the same goes with disco. Alongside Duck Sauce's aNYway, this track will hopefully show us how to get the groove back on.
A lot of talent from Aussie DJs at the moment. DCUP is currently on the top of my list in that area, but there is something about this Universe remix that could possibly come close to matching up. I know a lot has been done with most of Miami Horror's tracks, but this is probably the best remix of Sometimes out there. Though you can't really trump the original., I like how the remix didn't stray far from the original pace/sound but at the same time added a bit more kick to it. You can NEVER use to much synth.
There isn't much info about this new producer. The track did come with this intriguing introduction as to who they are.
"Not a lot is known about UNIVERSE with his/her/their identity shrouded in secrecy, however the little we do know is that he/she/they have exceptional production skills which has landed him/her/them official remix rights for some of the hottest tracks of now, combined with some incredible originals which are due out shortly. Universe has already been ear-marked as one to watch for the remainder of 2010."
Louis XIV was an indie rock quartet from San Diego, California. Known for their sexually provocative lyrics and double meanings, this band was actually banned from playing live in the state of Alabama. I just recently found out that this band had broken up mid-2009. They had a good run. These tracks are what got me into the whole indie-electro bonanza a few years back. RIP.
L.A's got its groove on. I guess it's full-steam ahead with summer music. Dam-Funk is known throughout Los Angeles as the "Ambassador of Boogie Funk." This hypnotizing track that is drenched with synths and bass has got all the right elements that will send you on your way to the beach this weekend. At least that's how I feel right now.
I was building up the music video for this song in my head. Sadly, what I saw wasn't what I imagined. Instead of a babe on a speed boat/jetski cruising through blue coastal waters with dolphins trailing right beside, I get a bunch of people who have spent the whole day passed out only to wake up again in the middle of the night and do the same thing. Real classy.
The Spaniards have brought are out with a new track from their upcoming Subiza LP coming out through Matador Records on June 8th, 2010. Get it here! Though it isn't as fist-pumped as their glorious summer track Deli, this is pretty chill. Looks like they've jumped on that hazy-voiced bandwagon that a lot of artists are coming out with. I'm not complaining though. It's the perfect mix of both dreamwave and pop.
Great weather here in the city. Spring officially starts tomorrow and I'm looking forward to a get-together at the park tomorrow afternoon with friends. If you're thinking doing the same thing, I suggest you get there EARLY to get a good spot. Trust me, you don't want to be cramped up with a plethora of half-naked people. The last time this was actually possible was around 7 months ago, so you have have no idea how much clothing people are going to shed. Heed my advice if you don't want to end up sitting beside some obscenely hairy, plus-size bear, or get caught on tape by one of those perverts with video cameras (they aren't hard to spot) as he pans through the crowd.
I recently heard a DJ spin both these tracks. Of course they aren't the exact remixes I heard, but great nonetheless. Putting up the ever famous KC & The Sunshine Band:
As well as one of the first electronic dance groups of the 80's, Nu Shooz. Mind you this is a husband and wife duo. This track topped the charts back in 1986.
Simon Green is releasing his 4th album entitled Black Sands next Tuesday, March 23. This is his best album yet. Though I really enjoyed the previous one where he collaborated with chilled out vocalist, Bajka, this new album has got some soulful tunes. Andreya Triana sounds so damn sexy...it's crazy.
Bonobo Tour (NYC leg) April 4 2010 - 8pm - Music Hall Of Williamsburg April 5 2010 - 8pm - Bowery Ballroom
So I know I just posted a remix of this song but I was compelled to put it up AGAIN because of this music video. This was made possible by The Occidental Saloon, a group from Provo, Utah who specialize in assisting artists to come up with music videos. Kudos to the group for doing an awesome job.
Neon Trees was featured on Pitchfork last month. They're a Utah-based indie rock back who are signed under the ever-reliable Mercury Records. They've got a Miike Snow feel to their music. If you can get the through the long intro, the beat gets catchy.
A member of L.A.'s fast rising electronic label, Binary, Fabian has been gracing the world with his electro powerhouse tracks. What is so good about his music is that it rings of retro beats that make you shake your toosh like crazy. I would know, I was just doing it. That being said, this music video made by TNUC gives us the best visual representation of his track, Heatwave. It's a wonderful collage of everything that was good about 80s movies. The best part is that clips of Scarface dominate most of the video. Tony Montana is just as badass as the track.
I was hoping that good weather was finally making its way to NYC. Turns out, I was wrong. I kid you not, the wind is howling from my window right now. The rain hasn't showed any signs of weakening as well. Getting home last night was actually a real drag. A 3 block walk seemed like forever.
White Hinterland is a Portland, Oregon-duo composed of Casey Dienel and Shawn Creeden. This is the first track of theirs I've come across. They're releasing their third album, Kairos some time this year. Icarus is the first single from that album. The vocals on this track have a whimsical tone to it. Though there is something dark about the resonating beats. They sound a lot like a more mellowed down version of Bat For Lashes.
Yeah, so this is the DCUP effect you'll see on the dancefloor. I've been a huge fan of this Aussie for about 2 months now. Parisien duo the Priors just had their track amped up to a whole different level. The beats are just eargasmic.
I'm also going to throw in this DCUP mash-up of Breakbot's Baby I'm Yours, and Madonna's Like A Prayer. Who would have thought it would blend together so well!
Oh yes. So Grum just dropped this new track/video a few hours ago on YouTube. EARGASM! I kid you not. I don't know if the vocals sampled are from some old song because it has got a really 80s vibe to it. In any case, its a superb kind of funk. You can also expect Grum's usual killer beats mixed in. Can't wait to hear more.
As for the video, well, you decide. One of the funniest stuff I've seen this week. The guy reminds me of a younger, creepier Richard Simmons. Only that he's doing the opposite of getting people fit.
I didn't know that LUDGF did remixes. As I mentioned in a previous post I did on them, this group is on the same wavelength as The Radio Dept. And by "same wavelength" I mean they both have those airy and dream-ish synths. Imagine them putting that spin on this genius of a track, by MillionYoung. Though the vocals might sound a bit more muffled because of layering of beats, the track is still A-okay!
My iTunes was on Shuffle and this track came on. Yes. One of the best tracks of 2008. I remember when I first moved to the city. One of the first nights I was out here, the DJ had this on his set. For some reason that whole scene just blew me away. Sentimental, I know. But that's one of the main reasons my 3 week vacation turned permanent.
Finding hidden gems is always a treat. More so when you find it while crawling through the insane amount of artists on MySpace. Recently, I've been putting the stalker moves on MySpace's Music section. If only there was an aggregator for MySpace. There is so much music there that is getting overlooked, and this is one of them.
Savannah, GA. Based on what I've read, these two guys were the most unlikely friends. Other than they supposedly "never connected" during a past run-in, one was majoring in Film (Samuel Cooper), and the other in Painting (Marshall Trotter). In the end, it was definitely talent that brought them together.
I'm really enjoying this track because there is something so pleasing about the rawness of the whole production. The trumpet loops that you hear from start to end , along with the chilled out guitar strumming make it such a spring/summer tune. Think: taking a joyride across country (I've never done that but I can imagine myself doing that while driving to this song). I hope to hear more from these guys in the future.
Though she currently resides in the UK, Cibelle Cavalli hails from one of the sexiest countries in the world, Sao Paolo, Brazil. She has been described as a self-styled purveyor of Tropical Funk. With this recently released track of hers, I highly doubt anybody would attest to that. Brasil has a strong line of influential artists: Antonio Carlos Jobim, Seu Jorge, Paulinho Moska, and a whole lot of Gilbertos. They stuck to the the norms of Bossanova. Cibelle on the other hand shakes it to its core and puts a sexier, more oh-la-la-ed tune to it. The track has the typical alluring and provocative vocals of women bossanova singers. What makes it stand out are the instrumentals that are a mix of contemporary and old-school. It's interesting how her roots press strongly influence on it.
Get ready to set your ears and mind a flight with the haziness of unadulterated musical bliss. Kisses is no doubt on Musicphile|osophy's watchlist for 2010. Their track Bermuda has vocals are reminiscent of Jens Lekman on a more amped up level of pop. The beats are bouncy, period! There is no other way to explain it and I would hate to overstress something as simple as that. This duo from LA will be making it big in no time. Everyone is in need for some cheerful, relaxing music and Kisses is serving it to us without hesitation, on a silver platter.
It's a 50+ weekend and NYC is looking great. It's the first 50+ weekend since September, I think? It sure is great to have the heat actually come in contact with your skin. This only means that Spring Break is fast approaching, graduation is getting closer, and for the working class, well, I hope the sun reaches you in your cubicle at work. To add that extra umph to your day, whether you're relaxing in your apartment, having a picnic outdoors, or are at the beach, I'm busting out THE tunes.
I can't find much about this duo except for the basics. Apparently, all other music blogs are buzzing with curiosity over the Cults. NYC-based. One guy and one girl. Both are film majors. That's about it. This single off their 7" has got that playfully relaxed tune that makes you feel as if you want to be sprawled out, slightly inebriated, on a pool bed in the middle of the afternoon. The xylophone, the gentle guitar, the echoing vocals akin to yes, you got it, a dream-like state, all sell the song so well. I would definitely coin this as one of those summer anthems.
Duck Sauce is a newly formed dynamic duo consisting of A-Trak and Armand Van Helden. These two big DJs have paired up to revive disco house, that which was lost somewhere among the many attempts of Hed Kandi's Disco compilations. I must say, this is a banging way to come back into existence. It's filthy disco from start to end. The sampled song is I Can Do It by Final Edition. Definitely one of the more funk-filled tracks from that golden era. The music video is just as fun to watch as it is to listen. It's written as aNYway to signify the roots of this great collaboration.
It definitely puts the oogie in boogie and the unk in funk!
Just because Sidney Crosby killed America's dream, I won't hate on him as much (also because I gave up hatin' for Lent), to pay tribute to this Canadian stand-out. A deviant of classical training, Gonzales puts a perfect twist onto all these tracks. It is not often that you hear a piano on a hip-hop track, unless you have an ear for some underground artists such as Nujabes. Apparently, he was here in NYC 2 weeks ago doing a show at Joe's Pub. Too bad I missed out on that. I recommend that you guys look up his collaborations with some big names such as Feist, Jamie Lidell, and A-Track.
FYI, on May 18, 2009, at the Cine 13 Theatre, Paris, he broke a world record for the longest solo-artist performance with a total time of 27 hours, 3 minutes and 44 seconds.
